Building on the achievements of the Defence of Britain project that ended in 2002, a symposium was held on the 8th and 9th of March 2011 to consider how the currently derelict nineteenth and twentieth century defences of the United Kingdom could be protected and preserved and to suggest innovative ways in which these defences could be re-used.

The symposium was organised by the Fortress Study Group under the auspices of its patron, HRH The Duke of Gloucester. A reception was held at the Museum on the evening of the 8th of March to which all attending the symposium were invited together with other guests prominently involved in heritage conservation.
